Unmasking My Superpower: Discovering ADHD at 32

For the longest time, I felt like something was wrong with me. I’ve been navigating life as a high-functioning Black woman, always striving for perfection and validation. I’ve excelled academically, professionally, and socially, often masking the inner turmoil that was brewing beneath the surface. It wasn’t until I was 32 that I uncovered the hidden culprit behind my lifelong struggles: ADHD.

For people like me, the signs of ADHD often go unnoticed, particularly when we’re deemed “high-functioning.” Our resilience, intelligence, and determination are often celebrated, while the underlying challenges are dismissed or minimized. When I finally received my diagnosis, I was met with dismissive comments like, “Oh, that’s not a big deal” or “You’ve done so well, why would that matter?”

While it’s true that I’ve managed to function well, it hasn’t been without its cost. The mental and emotional struggles I’ve endured have been significant. The constant self-doubt, the overwhelming anxiety, the difficulty with focus, and the hyperactive mind have taken a toll on my well-being.

Now that I understand the root cause of these challenges, I’m beginning to see ADHD as a superpower rather than a limitation. It’s the reason behind my creativity, my passion, and my unique perspective. However, with great power comes great responsibility. I’ve realized that I need to be kinder to myself and to stop seeking external validation for my internal processes.

One of the most significant changes I’m making is to address my negative self-talk. I’ve developed a habit of criticizing and scrutinizing myself, particularly after awkward social interactions or moments of rejection sensitivity. I’m learning to recognize these behaviors as symptoms of ADHD and to treat myself with compassion. By giving myself grace, I can catch these moments in real-time and respond more thoughtfully.

This newfound awareness is empowering. It’s allowing me to take control of my narrative and to embrace my true self. I’m no longer ashamed of my quirks or my challenges. Instead, I’m celebrating them as part of what makes me unique.

As I continue on this journey of self-discovery, I’m excited to see what the future holds. With the right tools and support, I believe that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. And so can YOU!
